Approximately 80 per cent of enterprise information is unstructured and ungoverned. It sits in file shares, email, SharePoint and collaboration platforms, largely unclassified, never placed under retention, and rarely examined. Organisations are now directing AI tools at precisely this material and expecting dependable results.
Ungoverned content creates exposure on several fronts at once. There is no single inventory of where information resides. Access cannot be properly controlled because sensitive material is unlabelled. Retention has never been enforced, so volume and discovery exposure compound each year. AI resolves none of this. It makes the consequences visible at scale, and does so in front of regulators, opposing parties and customers.
This workshop reframes the question from compliance obligation to business outcome. I will work through what governed information makes possible in specific sectors: the insurer settling claims accurately at scale, the energy company making better subsurface decisions from well logs and survey data, the life sciences organisation shortening discovery timelines from compliant batch and laboratory records, the general counsel preserving privilege while reducing discovery cost, and the regulated institution answering an auditor with defensible records.
We will then work through the lifecycle in two stages. The first is cleaning the estate: inventory across every repository, classification tied to a file plan, and remediation of redundant, obsolete and trivial content, where volume reductions of 30 to 60 per cent are common. The second is keeping it clean: retention applied to every record, enforcement automated across repositories, and disposition that is continuous and defensible.
Delegates will map their own repositories against the model, identify their highest exposure gaps, and leave with a prioritised 90 day plan for an executive sponsor. The session concerns method rather than tooling, and no technical background is required.
