Use Case: ‘Cassey is a Wurundjeri woman tasked by her community with searching the collections at the Australian National University (ANU) for data about them and ensuring that the data is held appropriately.' In partnership with the First Nations Portfolio at the ANU, KurrawongAI (K-AI) has been creating and testing a methodology to meet this Use Case.
In this presentation, Margie Smith (K-AI) and Adegboyega Adeniran (ANU) will outline the work of the Indigenous Data Network Catalogue Project to date to highlight the methodology undertaken to estimate likely Indigenous Data content from the main ANU data and publications catalogue. This will include how data was classified for discovery by the relevant communities.
Data Governance & Policy Specialist Margie is a data governance, management, and policy strategist with over 16 years’ experience in the federal public sector. She has comprehensive knowledge of data policy, geospatial metadata and addressing standards development, is a member of DAMA, RIMPA, Standards Australia and the International Standardization Organization (ISO) technical working groups for geospatial, metadata and information governance.
In 2009 Margie delivered the ANZLIC Spatial Resource Discovery and Access Toolkit and supported the cross-jurisdictional working group for the implementation of ANZLIC spatial metadata across governments.
In 2021 she delivered advice to the Deputy Secretaries Data Group on the use of metadata for data discoverability and this formed the basis of the current work of the OƯice of the National Data Commissioner’s data asset cataloguing program. Currently Margie consults on projects such as Geoscience Australia’s enterprise data catalogue metadata, vocabularies and archive, and expanding that organisation's data governance capability generally. She also works for the Indigenous Data Network, a quasi non-government organisation within research sector, establishing governance policy, procedure and people roles for Indigenous Australians with respect to their data. Margie is a Certified Data Management Professional (Associate Level) and is based in Canberra
Gboyega is the project lead for the Indigenous Data Initiative at the Australian National University’s First Nations Portfolio (FNP). Gboyega has a background in geography and water governance as an interdisciplinary researcher before moving into the data governance space. He completed his PhD at the ANU Fenner school of Environment and Society.
Gboyega’s research and teaching interests cuts across environmental policy, water and climate adaptation and mitigation. He consults for the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions and as a senior consultant for international NGOs such as FAIRACTION. Gboyega worked with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water to deliver key environmental water project management assets and improve stakeholder communication within the Murray-Darling Basin. Prior to joining the FNP in 2022, Gboyega worked with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) – Newcastle, on the Tomago Wetland Rehabilitation Project and several academic research positions at the ANU.
Gboyega has extensive experience in community leadership and politics and has served in several leadership roles both in Nigeria and Australia. He was a former President of the ANU African Students Association and treasurer of the Newcastle Chess Association.
