This session examine the benefits and drawbacks of using AI Large Language Models (LLM) -- like ChatGPT -- at various points in the policy development process. We'll look at what it does well and what it does poorly, so we can determine when we can rely on the output of generative language technology and when we need to supplement it.
Lewis S. Eisen has been called “the man who makes policies fun. Drawing on his experience as a practising lawyer, a technology consultant, and a policy writer in the Government of Canada, he has become a leading authority on the use of respectful language in policy drafting. He is the author of the Amazon international bestseller RULES: Powerful Policy Wording to Maximize Engagement, and his approach to drafting policy has been adopted by groups at organizations around the world.
Lewis obtained a law degree at the University of Toronto, practised law in the same city for a few years and then he moved into the area of law office technology management. He spent the next 15 years consulting with a variety of profit and nonprofit organizations, gaining extensive experience in the corporate support function.
Between 2001 and 2017 he worked for the Government of Canada, spending the last several years specializing in developing administrative policies, predominantly for the information management support function. He has written half a dozen books and dozens of articles for journals and newspapers, and speaks internationally.
