4pm – 4.25pm AEDT, 21 October 2026 ‐ 25 mins

Stream 2 | The Carnegie Stage

AI is a fast-changing landscape which influences everyone’s daily life in various way and differing degrees. But for local government councils based in Victoria, AI can bring both benefits in undertaking some of the repetitive and mundane tasks, while also bringing governance issues on how it should be managed. In Derek's PhD which this session is based on, he will be examining three council departments (records management, planning and building) as to where AI could play a role in assisting staff in their day-to-day workflow. This will then be referenced with both external legislation and policies that have implications on records management, along with internal governance protocols.

This presentation will be using some examples from a council planning department and their role in assessing planning applications and how the workflow could be assisted by AI. He will also discuss some preliminary findings as to the use of AI that he has found in his research so far while using Ararat Rural City Council as a case study.
