Updated RMAT Now Available: Supporting Stronger Records Governance

Stronger Standards, Clearer Guidance
The Records Management Assessment Tool (RMAT) has been updated to align with the revised Standard on the physical storage of State records and Standard on records management. While the core 19 questions remain the same, several have been refined to better reflect compliance requirements, with updates to both question wording and maturity levels. The RMAT is available to download in Word or Excel format.
Evidence-Based, Future-Focused
The revised RMAT strengthens the link between each question and the relevant legislation, including the State Records Act 1998, State Records Regulation 2024, and mandatory standards. Preliminary submission questions are now mandatory and include CEO endorsement. These changes won’t impact historical data mapping from previous monitoring exercises, and from 2026, submissions will be verified on a sampling basis.
Prepare for the 2026 RME
Public offices must submit their RMAT responses via the Service Portal for the 2026 Recordkeeping Monitoring Exercise in March. Submissions must include evidence to justify maturity ratings—critical for internal audits and oversight bodies.
