Digital Preservation Fundamentals: Why Best-Practice Records Management Must Include Digital Preservation

Records management isn't complete without a digital preservation strategy, but most organisations aren't sure where to start. In this conversation-style session, DatacomIT's John Cox is joined by a representative from Preservica to explore why best-practice records management must include digital preservation, and what that looks like in practice.

Drawing on RIMPA Global’s recent Roadshow presentation, Small Actions, Long Life, Peta Sweeney introduced the ABC framework, Audit, Benchmark and Consolidate, alongside real-world examples highlighting a critical distinction: retaining digital content is not the same as preserving it. While the data itself may survive, its context, meaning and usability can be lost over time.

John will also be joined by Neil from Preservica to discuss how a platform like Preservica, and its latest iteration, Preserve365, is helping organisations worldwide automate many of the practical steps Peta describes. Whether records are managed in a traditional EDRMS or via the manage-in-place model within M365, Preservica helps organisations move from ad hoc risk reduction to sustainable, active digital preservation.

Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the difference between storage and preservation, practical first steps they can take without a business case, and how technology fits in once the groundwork is laid.
