The Role
The APS 4–5 Librarian delivers high-quality library and information services to Defence staff through a customer-focused, digital-first service model. The role supports users both through onsite service delivery at the Australian Defence College Library and via national, channel-based services, including virtual and online access. The position also contributes to research, discovery and access to information that supports service delivery and operational outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Supporting onsite library services at the Australian Defence College Library, including collections and face-to-face customer support, to maintain a high-performing, customer-centred environment.
2. Delivering library services through national service channels, including virtual enquiries, LMS requests and CRM platforms such as ServiceNow.
3. Providing research and information support using digital discovery tools and electronic resources.
4. Contributing to quality assurance activities to ensure service responses and research outputs are accurate, consistent and aligned with service standards.
5. Identifying access issues, service trends and user needs, and contributing to service improvement initiatives.
6. Supporting the evaluation of electronic resources through usage analysis, access reviews and user feedback.
7. Working collaboratively with colleagues across the Defence library network to support consistent national practices and service planning.
Skills and Experience:
1. Experience delivering modern library or information services across onsite and digital service environments.
2. Experience providing face-to-face services in a professional library or information setting.
3. Sound understanding of digital discovery platforms, research practices and electronic information resources.
4. Demonstrated research skills, including the ability to locate, evaluate, synthesise, and present information to meet Defence staff needs.
5. Ability to deliver engaging face to face and online library education sessions tailored to diverse user needs.
6. Well-developed organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
7. Strong stakeholder engagement skills and a customer-centred approach.
8. A proactive commitment to quality, consistency and continuous improvement.
