Access to Information Day 2026: What’s Happening Around Australia?
This year, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) is marking IAID from 28 September to 4 October under the theme Transparency + Access = Information Integrity. The theme highlights how access to reliable government information can support information integrity and help address misinformation, disinformation and information disorder.
Here’s what’s happening around Australia.
Australian Government | Canberra + Online
The OAIC will host a hybrid event at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House on 21 September. Australian Government FOI practitioners and senior leaders will come together to discuss information access, contemporary challenges and practical approaches to effective FOI administration. Queensland | Solomon Lecture
On 28 September, the Office of the Information Commissioner Queensland will host its annual Solomon Lecture at Parliament House in Brisbane and online.
Award-winning journalist and foreign correspondent Professor Peter Greste will deliver this year’s lecture, Fact versus Fake: Tackling information disorder in the digital age. Learn more here
New South Wales | Right to Know Week
NSW will mark Right to Know Week 2026 with an event at Parliament of NSW in Sydney on 29 September.
NSW Information Commissioner and CEO Professor Rosalind Croucher AM will facilitate a panel exploring information integrity and the role it plays in how people understand, engage with and respond to issues that affect their lives. Learn more here
Western Australia | IAID for FOI Officers
The Office of the Information Commissioner WA will hold an event for agency FOI officers on 30 September. The Information Commissioner and Information Access Deputy Commissioner will provide an update on the state of FOI in Western Australia and discuss challenges facing agencies and the regulator. Victoria | The Ideal State of FOI
Victoria’s activities continue on 1 October, with the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner presenting an online session, The ideal state of Freedom of Information in Victoria.
The session will explore recommendations arising from the Integrity and Oversight Committee’s inquiry into the operation of Victoria’s FOI Act, with a particular focus on supporting a culture of open access. Learn more here

International Access to Information Day is an opportunity to recognise the importance of access to government information and the work undertaken across agencies to make that information available, reliable and accessible.
