Ancestry.com is investing heavily in artificial intelligence to transform the way historical records are digitised and made accessible. By combining proprietary handwriting recognition AI with human review, the company has reduced the time required to digitise and index historical records from around nine months to fewer than nine days.

The company, which now hosts more than 71 billion historical records, plans to invest US$450 million over the next 10 to 15 years to expand its digitisation efforts and improve the accuracy of previously scanned records. While AI has dramatically accelerated processing, Ancestry emphasises that human expertise remains essential for validating results, preserving historical accuracy and maintaining cultural sensitivity.

The initiative highlights how AI is reshaping archival preservation by making vast collections of handwritten records searchable while reinforcing the importance of human oversight in ensuring the integrity and authenticity of historical information.
