Archives New Zealand has released new guidance to help public sector organisations assess and strengthen their information management (IM) practices using its Information Management Maturity Assessment tool.

The first phase focuses on the Governance category (Topics 1–6), providing practical guidance on what good information management looks like across six key areas: IM strategy, IM policy, governance arrangements and executive sponsorship, integration into business processes, outsourced functions and collaborative arrangements, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The guidance includes questions to help organisations evaluate their maturity, examples of supporting evidence, real-world examples of good practice assessed at the 'Managing' level or above, and links to the mandatory Information and Records Management Standard. Additional guidance is also available for organisations managing information of importance to Māori.

For records and information management (R&IM) professionals, these resources provide a valuable framework for identifying governance gaps, benchmarking organisational maturity and developing targeted improvements. They also reinforce the importance of executive accountability, clear policies and embedding information management into everyday business operations.

Archives New Zealand has confirmed that further guidance covering additional maturity assessment categories and topics will be released in phases.
