Released in March, the Government’s expectations for data centres and AI infrastructure developers set a clear benchmark for operating in Australia. These include aligning with national interests and data sovereignty, supporting the energy transition, ensuring sustainable water use, investing in local skills, and contributing to research and innovation.  Click here to read the Expectations of Data Centres and AI Infrustructure Developers report.

For Records and Information Managers, the implications are significant. As AI adoption accelerates, the infrastructure underpinning data storage, processing and access must be secure, transparent and environmentally sustainable. The expectations emphasise strong data governance, protection of sensitive information, and resilience against disruption, all core considerations for information management professionals.

Building on this framework, the Government has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Anthropic, marking the first major agreement under Australia’s National AI Plan. The partnership signals a commitment to responsible AI development, with Anthropic agreeing to align any future Australian operations with the Government’s infrastructure expectations.

The MoU also outlines collaboration across research, workforce development and AI safety, including support for local researchers, startups and small businesses. It reinforces a broader national approach that brings together government, industry and research to ensure AI benefits are shared while maintaining strong safeguards.

For the information management sector, this combined direction highlights a clear trajectory. AI is no longer just a technology initiative, it is becoming embedded in national policy, infrastructure and governance. Ensuring high-quality data, defensible recordkeeping, and compliance with evolving regulatory expectations will be critical to enabling trustworthy, effective AI outcomes across organisations.
