In an update published on 7 October 2026, the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) outlined the Committee's role in providing independent, non-binding expert advice on selected government AI initiatives, particularly those considered high-risk, sensitive, novel or complex.

The Committee will assess AI projects before deployment, examining potential risks, safeguards, ethical considerations and alignment with government policies. It will also review agency responses to serious AI incidents to identify lessons and improve governance practices.

During its first meeting, the Committee considered two proposed AI initiatives. The Attorney-General's Department presented potential applications for document analysis, matter triage and workflow optimisation, while Services Australia outlined a proof of concept using AI to help employees locate internal operational documentation.

Committee members emphasised the importance of human oversight, quality assurance, privacy protection and ongoing monitoring. Government agencies will remain responsible for their AI implementation decisions and associated risks.

For records and information management (R&IM) professionals, the Committee's work reinforces the critical role of information governance, data quality, privacy and reliable organisational records in supporting responsible AI adoption. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into government operations, strong information management frameworks will be essential to ensuring accountability, transparency and public trust.
