Commonwealth Statutory Declarations Go Digital With myGov

In a groundbreaking development, Australians can now execute Commonwealth statutory declarations digitally via the myGov app. This innovation, announced by Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus on February 12, 2024, leverages the Australian Government Digital ID, allowing for the verification process without a witness. The initiative, which became effective on January 1, aims to streamline the creation of legal documents, offering three valid methods for declarations: digitally through myGov, electronic signatures with video-link witnessing, or the traditional paper method. Expected to save over $156 million annually, this digital shift enhances the efficiency and accessibility of government services, promising significant time and cost savings across sectors.
