Reflecting on her first six months in the role, the Commissioner noted that FOI is fundamental to democracy, enabling Australians to better understand government decisions and participate in public debate. She also highlighted increasing demand for FOI services, with more than 43,000 applications lodged last financial year.

Key priorities for the OAIC include:

  • Promoting open government
  • Making FOI compliance easier
  • Improving regulatory and case management effectiveness
  • Building agency capability in FOI administration

The Commissioner stressed that strong FOI administration depends on proactive information release, good recordkeeping, timely responses and a culture that recognises access to information as a public right, not an administrative burden.

For records and information managers, the article reinforces the growing importance of transparency, accessible records and information governance in building public confidence and supporting good administration across government.
