Information Integrity in Focus for International Access to Information Day

This year’s international theme, “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age,” focused on the relationship between access to information, transparency and the challenges created by AI-generated content, misinformation and disinformation.

The OAIC noted that proactive disclosure, effective recordkeeping and timely access to government information all contribute to information integrity and public access. Freedom of Information Commissioner Alice Linacre said strong recordkeeping was among the fundamentals supporting transparency, accountability and trust in government services.

Community support for access to government information also remains high. According to the Cross-jurisdictional Information Access Study cited by the OAIC, 96% of Australians consider the right to access government-held information important or very important.

As part of International Access to Information Day activities, information access commissioners across Australia have also endorsed a consistent Access to Information icon for Commonwealth, state and territory government websites. The icon is designed to provide a recognisable entry point for people seeking government information.
