ISO 8000-3: A New Standard for Information and Data Management
Currently under development, the standard will provide requirements and guidance for establishing, implementing and continually improving an Information and Data Management System (IDMS). It covers the full information lifecycle, from creating and validating data through to retention, retrieval, sharing and disposal, while embedding continual improvement into data quality practices.
For records and information management professionals, the draft standard reinforces the critical role of information governance. High-quality data depends on well-managed information, clear accountability, strong metadata, effective retention and defensible disposal, all core disciplines of the profession.
As organisations increasingly adopt AI and data-driven decision making, the quality of the information behind these technologies has never been more important. ISO 8000-3 highlights that data quality is not simply an IT responsibility, but an organisation-wide management system that aligns with other ISO standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 27001.
While the standard is still being developed, organisations can begin preparing by reviewing their information governance frameworks, data quality processes and lifecycle management practices.
