The plan highlights the potential for generative AI to improve public services, streamline interactions with government and assist public sector employees with workload management.

According to the document, all public servants will receive training and access to approved generative AI tools. The plan positions this rollout as a proactive step designed to keep pace with changing community expectations and developments in comparable international public sectors.

The Government notes that maintaining public trust will be a central consideration in the adoption of AI. Existing policies and guidance on responsible technology use remain in place, and the plan is supported by a public Statement of Intent that outlines expectations for how AI should be used within the APS.

The plan also indicates that workforce impacts will be examined closely. This includes identifying how roles may change, what new skills and training may be required, and how employees and unions will be involved in ongoing discussions about the introduction of AI.

Consultation frameworks will be strengthened to ensure staff have opportunities to provide feedback throughout the transition. The document emphasises the need for transparent and well managed implementation as the APS adapts to new technologies.

Overall, the plan sets out a framework aimed at preparing the public service for emerging opportunities and challenges as AI continues to evolve.
