NSW Building the Archives Policy

In June 2023, RIMPA Global members in New South Wales provided feedback on State Records NSW consultation draft Building the Archives, a policy which guides the identification of State Archives and was originally published in 2001. The RIMPA Global submission was one of 185 submissions received from a diverse range of stakeholders.  Feedback in the RIMPA Global submission was consistent with the overall responses which found that the appraisal policy objectives generally remained sound.

Based on feedback, the initial consultation report recommended:

  • Narrowing the scope of the policy to be about the identification of State archives alone.
  • Retaining the intention behind the existing objectives but reshaping them to improve clarity.
  • Addressing the records of First Nations peoples by including them in examples.
  • Simplifying the policy both in structure and language.
  • Reducing subjective language and including examples of records under each objective.
  • Ensuring that the language and examples included are representatives of all types of public offices.

The full initial consultation report is available on the State Records NSW website Policy review | State Records NSW

Thanks to the RIMPA Global members in NSW who contributed their feedback to this important review.

State Records NSW are now seeking members' feedback to narrow the scope of the draft Building the Archives Policy to focus on the identification of State archives.  If you'd like to contribute you can have your say by providing feedback to [email protected] by 31 October 2023.
