The NT Hackers created an innovative solution to the problem ‘How can organisations reduce the carbon footprint of their information management practices to promote sustainability?’

The winning team NT Hackers, led by Cuong Hoang, brought fresh perspectives, energy and creative problem-solving to tackle a sustainability challenge that is often overlooked in information management. Taking home $10,000 in prize money for their forward-thinking proposal, their cost-optimisation tool, designed to offset CO₂ emissions and maximise government grant opportunities, captured the judges’ attention for its intelligent balance of sustainability and practicality. The solution not only supports greener outcomes but also empowers records managers to make informed decisions on archiving and destruction, ensuring maximum retrieval of grant potential.

Thank you to the National Archives of Australia for sponsoring this event as well as our volunteers and who guided participants as mentors and judges!

A Celebration of Diverse Ideas

The diversity and depth of solutions presented made judging a formidable challenge. Over 2.5 hours of evaluation and 38 individual conversations, the expert sustainability-focused judging panel compared an extraordinary range of ideas, truly a case of “apples, oranges and watermelons.” This diversity underscored the vibrancy and innovation shaping the sector, with several concepts showing strong potential to attract future investment and drive meaningful change.
