OAIC Seeks Feedback on Children’s Online Privacy Code

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) is seeking feedback on its draft Children’s Online Privacy Code, developed under the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024.

The draft Code outlines how organisations must handle children’s personal information online, with a strong focus on transparency, safety and responsible data practices. An accompanying Explanatory Statement provides further detail on how the Code is intended to operate.

For Records and Information Managers, this consultation signals increasing regulatory focus on how sensitive personal information, particularly relating to children, is collected, managed and protected. It reinforces the need for robust governance, clear data handling practices, and defensible retention and disposal.

The OAIC is inviting input from industry, academia and the broader community, with consultation open now.

Organisations are encouraged to review the draft and contribute feedback to help shape future privacy obligations in this critical area.
