Public Records Bill 2023
In October 2023, RIMPA Global members in Queensland provided a submission on the Public Records Bill 2023 to the Queensland Parliament Community Support and Services Committee.
Building on the great work undertaken by Queensland members during the Review of the Public Records Act 2002, the submission was largely supportive of the steps taken to modernise information and recordkeeping practices across the Queensland Public Sector as well as implementing the recommendations made in the Report of Review of the Public Records Act 2002.
Additionally, our submission highlighted the need for:
- further defining a public record using clear high level format types such as data, video, image, artefacts
- specific Governor's correspondence to be included be default, rather than excluded by default
- the rights of First Nationals people to be included in schedule 1
- maintaining independence of the role of the State Archivist
- strengthened compliance requirement for standards, policy and guidelines
- realignment of phrases in the Bill with the Records Governance Policy to aid understanding and implementation.
You can watch the Committee's Public Briefing on Parliament TV.
A Public Hearing will be held in Brisbane on Monday, 13 November 2023 and the Committee Report is due to be tabled in Parliament on 24 November 2023. The Government will have three months to respond to the report’s recommendations.
Thank you to the Queensland members involved in contributing to the submission which was completed in just a few days due to a tight submission deadline.
