Registrations are now open for the inaugural ALGIM Learning Exchange, taking place in Melbourne on 11–12 August 2026.

Designed specifically for local government professionals, the ALGIM Learning Exchange is not a traditional conference. Instead, it offers two days of practical learning, real-world experiences, honest conversations, and council-led case studies delivered by professionals who have faced the challenges firsthand and are ready to share what they've learned.

The program has been carefully developed around the key issues councils are navigating every day, including Artificial Intelligence and Data, Customer Experience, Process Improvement, Information Governance, and Cyber Security.

Attendees will also hear from an outstanding lineup of keynote speakers and thought leaders, including Dr Catherine Ball, renowned scientific futurist and long-time supporter of ALGIM; Dr Jonathan Reichental, university lecturer, Forbes journalist and author of Smart Cities for Dummies; and a CEO panel exploring the theme The Future of Local Government: Ready or Not?

The CEO panel will feature:

  • Sam Johnson, CEO, City of Launceston
  • Jacqui Weatherill, CEO, City of Greater Dandenong
  • Gail Gatt, CEO, Horsham Rural Shire Council
  • Ali Wastie, CEO, City of Greater Geelong

Guiding the event will be the highly respected Simon MC, a former local government professional who has gone on to become a five-time ABIA MC of the Year award winner.

Beyond the keynote presentations, delegates will gain valuable insights from councils across Australia, including Mildura Rural City Council, Maribyrnong City Council, City of Newcastle, Golden Plains Shire and Cardinia Shire. These sessions will focus on practical case studies, lessons learned, and approaches that attendees can take back and apply within their own organisations.

The Learning Exchange will also feature interactive workshops led by ALGIM Communities of Practice and collaborative sessions delivered in partnership with RIMPA, creating additional opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and professional development.

Celebrate and Connect

The event experience extends beyond the conference sessions with a special networking celebration on Tuesday evening.

Rather than a formal sit-down dinner, ALGIM has created a relaxed and welcoming environment featuring drinks, canapés, comfortable lounges and great conversation. The evening is designed to bring peers together, foster meaningful connections and celebrate achievements across the sector.

The celebration will also recognise recipients of the inaugural ALGIM Australia Project of the Year Award and the ALGIM Australia Study Grant.

ALGIM Australia Project of the Year Award

This award recognises councils delivering projects that improve services, strengthen communities and create positive outcomes for residents. It provides an opportunity to showcase and celebrate outstanding achievements across local government.

ALGIM Australia Study Grant

The ALGIM Australia Study Grant supports professional development and learning opportunities for local government professionals, helping invest in the people who continue to make a difference within their communities.

Applications for both awards close on 19 June 2026.

Affordable Professional Development

ALGIM has intentionally kept registration fees affordable, recognising that cost should never be a barrier to learning and collaboration.

Registration Fees

  • Members: $375 + GST
  • Non-Members: $475 + GST (includes a complimentary 12-month individual ALGIM membership)

The Learning Exchange offers a unique opportunity for councils to learn from one another, share experiences and build stronger connections across the sector.
