Review Calls for Modernisation of Standards Development in Australia
An independent review commissioned in August 2025 has highlighted the need to modernise Standards Australia’s development processes to ensure they remain responsive, inclusive and fit-for-purpose in a rapidly changing environment.
Aligned with Standards Australia’s FIT for the Future strategy (FY26–30), the review reinforces the critical role standards play in supporting national competitiveness, innovation and safety.
Stakeholder consultation revealed strong support for the standards system, alongside key areas for improvement. These include the speed of standards development, limitations in IT systems, inconsistencies in support, and challenges within committee structures such as representation, governance and conflicts of interest.
For Records and Information Managers, the findings point to broader governance themes, particularly the need for stronger project management, clearer accountability and more effective collaboration across complex stakeholder environments.
The review also highlights the growing potential of AI to improve efficiency in standards development, signalling future opportunities to streamline processes and enhance consistency.
Overall, the recommendations present a timely opportunity to strengthen Australia’s standards framework, ensuring it continues to support best practice, compliance and innovation across all sectors.
