Universal Access to Knowledge in a Fragile Digital World

Internet Archive Switzerland, an independent non-profit foundation based in St. Gallen, is working to address this challenge through its mission of “Universal Access to All Knowledge.”

In an age where information appears limitless, organisations focused on digital preservation are warning that much of today’s knowledge is far more fragile than many realise.

The organisation partners with institutions and researchers to collect, preserve and provide access to digital information for learning and research, recognising that digital content is increasingly vulnerable to technological change, deletion and restricted access.

While the internet continues to grow at an extraordinary pace, digital information can disappear quickly due to obsolete file formats, storage failures, accidental deletion, cyber threats and the growing use of paywalls that limit public access to knowledge.

For records and information management professionals, the issue highlights a growing global challenge: ensuring digital information remains authentic, accessible and usable over time.

To help address these risks, Internet Archive Switzerland has launched several preservation initiatives. One of its key projects, developed in partnership with the University of St. Gallen, focuses on creating a Generative Artificial Intelligence Archive to preserve today’s AI models and technologies for future generations.

The foundation has also launched an Endangered Archives initiative aimed at protecting vulnerable collections threatened by conflict, disasters, suppression and technological loss. The project encourages collaboration with global partners to rescue and preserve at-risk digital and historical materials before they disappear permanently.

As governments, organisations and communities become increasingly dependent on digital information, initiatives like these reinforce the critical role of digital preservation, information governance and long-term access strategies in protecting knowledge for the future.
